This selection is a great addition to any flower garden, attracting pollinators and adding beauty. The flowers are similar to chamomile in appearance. This bitter tea can be good for headaches and for digestive woes.

Harvest leaves and flowers as they are fully open. Lay to dry in a cool dry place out of the sun. This is a short lived perennial that is best divided every three years.

Botanical name: Tanacetum parthenium
Type: Short-lived, self-seeding herbaceous perennial hardy to -20 F
Scarification/Stratification: None needed
Sow temp/season: When soil is 50F+ from early spring until early fall.
Sow depth/spacing: Surface sow and press into soil. Sow tiny seeds in pots then transplant to larger pots the first year, plant out to the landscape the following spring.
Final spacing: Final spacing is 18 inches to 2 feet.
Final height/spread: Final height is four feet high and two feet spread.
pH range: 5.8 – 7.3
Soil type: Regular garden soil, not picky
Nutrition Adding some compost from time to time is all that is required. Too much nutrition diminishes the final medicinal properties of cut plant.
Drainage: Best to grow in well drained plant sites.
Sun: Full sun to part shade, the further north it grows the more sun it can take. As with most plants.
Time to maturity: Will flower early the second spring through late fall.
Hilling: None needed.
Suckering: Branches profusely.
Propagation: Plant seed in a pot/plug flat at least 1 inch big and can ground layer or take stem cuttings which root with ease.
Hybridization: Will hybridize with other plants in genus, such as the tansy. Plant at a minimum of 50 feet to keep strain pure, if saving seed.
Uses: Makes a potent tea, helping migraine headaches, upset stomach, restlessness and arthritis, to name a few. Tea doubles as a potent insecticide. Many uses.
